Social Media Backlash: An Applebee’s Experience

NBC’s Herb Weisbaum posted a pretty good analysis of the missteps of Applebee’s in the wake of the well-publicized firing of a waitress who posted a snarky receipt online for the lolz. People got outraged, of course, but the company stood by its decision to fire the waitress for violating company policy.

The problem for Applebee’s wasn’t so much that they fired her, but rather, that they didn’t handle the social media backlash very well. There’s good lessons in here for businesses that engage their customers via social media, for those who care to read it.
